Performing a radio check.

Your radio is a very important safety tool on your boat, but is useless if not operating correctly.

A radio check is a good idea before logging on for your trip.

You call:

VN6KC, (three times), this is (your call sign) three times.

requesting a radio check.

over.

We will reply:

(your call sign) three times, this is VN6KC, (three times)

receiving you 5 by 5 at Rockingham sea rescue, Point Peron.

over.

You then proceed to log on.

Special note:

 5 by 5 = loud and clear.

1 by 5 = very low but clear.

5 by 1 = loud but very distorted.

Prior to departure you log on with VN6KC using the following radio procedure....

You call:

VN6KC, (three times), this is.. (your call sign and/or your DPI number) 3 times.

over.

We will reply:

(your call sign) three times, this VN6KC, (three times)

over.

You reply:

VN6KC, VN6KC, this is (your call sign)

I wish to log on.

I have.....

Please speak slowly and clearly,

remember that the operator has to record all this information on the radio log.

Give your destination as accurately as possible.

 (10k west of garden island, is a lot of water to search!!!)

(10k, 245 degrees west of the john ledge marker, is helping us to help you!!)

We don't mind if you allow your children to use the radio,

but please ensure that we have confirmed the information provided.

And, how do I log off??

On returning to your point of departure you should always remember to log off.

You call:

VN6KC, (three times) this is (your call sign) three times.

over.

We will reply:

(your call sign) three times, this is VN6KC.

over.

You reply:

VN6KC, this is (your call sign), I have returned to the ramp, please take me off the log.

over.

We will reply:

(your call sign) taking you off the log.

This is VN6KC standing by.

Please, always ensure that we have received your log off.

if we fail to confirm your log off you may assume that we have not received it.

Either call us again or log off via phone on 9528 2222.

Should you fail to log off we shall commence over due procedures at your ETR plus 30 minutes.

Amending your information on the log.

If you have changed your position, or have decided to change your ETR,

 you should also amend the information we have on your log.

You call:

VN6KC, (three times) this is (your call sign) three times.

over.

We will reply:

(Your call sign) three times, this is VN6KC, (three times)

over.

You reply:

VN6KC, VN6KC, I wish to amend my log.

My new position is (.........)

and

My revised ETR is (......) hours.

over.

We will reply:

Your new location is (.....) and

Your new ETR is (.....)

over.

You reply:

PRIOR TO COMMENCING A DIVE YOU SHOULD LOG THE DIVE ON WITH VN6KC.

You call:

VN6KC, (three times), this is (your call sign) three times.

YOU PROVIDE THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION:

 WE WILL CONFIRM THIS INFORMATION BEFORE STANDING BY.

LOG OFF ON YOUR RETURN TO THE BOAT.

WE WILL CALL YOU AT YOUR ETR TIME IF YOU HAVE NOT LOGGED OFF,

AND WILL NOTIFY THE WATER POLICE IMMEDIATELY SHOULD YOU FAIL TO ANSWER.

OUR PRIMARY CONCERN IS YOUR SAFETY.

CALLING IN DISTRESS!!!!!!

NATURE OF CALL.

CALL TYPE.

IN DEADLY DANGER MAYDAY
IN URGENT DISTRESS PAN PAN
URGENT SAFETY WARNINGS SECURITE

Using channel 16 (vhf) or 88 (27mhz) make your Call Type three times:

I.e.. MAYDAY, MAYDAY, MAYDAY! And wait for a response.

We will respond with:

Vessel calling MAYDAY, this is VN6KC, VN6KC, VN6KC,

What is your emergency?

Over

You should now, calmly and clearly, state your call sign, DPI NUMBER, and the nature of your emergency.

We will reply and request the following information:

From this information the radio operator will determine the action required,

(and may request that you change to a different channel)

while the appropriate procedures are actioned.

Should the emergency be a towing requirement,

the operator will request further information about the vessel and your destination,

Once rescue procedures have commenced the operator will keep you informed of it's progress,

and request that you maintain a listening watch on a predetermined channel.

You must advise the operator should conditions of your distress change.

Most important: Stay calm and stay in contact.
