When you log on we know.......
your call sign and DPI boat registration number.
how many people on board (including yourself).
amount of fuel.
name of the boat ramp from which you launched.
your destination .
your expected time of return (ETR).. and,
the radio frequency you are using.
if you have not returned by your expected ETR we will......
call you every 10 minutes on your recorded frequency.
at ETR plus 30 minutes we will contact the water police.
we will continue to call you every 10 minutes on working and distress channels.
we will, on request of the water police, conduct a ramp search for your registered vehicles.
we will continue to work closely with the water police until you have been located.
We will never.......
contact your home phone number (the water police may have to do this)
we will never leave you at sea, without adequate coverage, and
we will never take you off our log until you have logged off safely.

Your radio is a very important safety tool on your boat, but is useless if not operating correctly.
A radio check is a good idea before logging on for your trip.
You call:

Special note:
5 by 5 = loud and clear.
1 by 5 = very low but clear.
5 by 1 = loud but very distorted.

Should you fail to log off we shall commence over due procedures at your ETR plus 30 minutes.

LOG OFF ON YOUR RETURN TO THE BOAT.
WE WILL CALL YOU AT YOUR ETR TIME IF YOU HAVE NOT LOGGED OFF,
AND WILL NOTIFY THE WATER POLICE IMMEDIATELY SHOULD YOU FAIL TO ANSWER.

Using channel 16 (vhf) or 88 (27mhz) make your Call Type three times:

What is your emergency?

You should now, calmly and clearly, state your call sign, DPI NUMBER, and the nature of your emergency.
We will reply and request the following information:
Position (gps co-ordinates if available)
Problem being experienced.
People on board. state if there are children involved.
are they safe and are you at anchor.
From this information the radio operator will determine the action required,
(and may request that you change to a different channel)
while the appropriate procedures are actioned.
Should the emergency be a towing requirement,
the operator will request further information about the vessel and your destination,
Once rescue procedures have commenced the operator will keep you informed of it's progress,
and request that you maintain a listening watch on a predetermined channel.
You must advise the operator should conditions of your distress change.
Most important: Stay calm and stay in contact.
